Air Canada flight crash lands and skids to runway
An Air Canada flight crash landed 25 metres short of the runway at Halifax International Airport injuring 25 passengers.
The flight from Toronto, carrying 133 passengers and five crew, skidded until it hit the runway yesterday after the plane’s main landing gear was broken off by it hitting an antenna on the approach.
The plane’s nose, engine and wing were severely damaged in the landing.
The incident happened during a snowstorm and led to a major power outage at the airport which has since been restored.
The Air Canada flight had been holding west of Halifax prior to landing, waiting for the visibility to improve.
An investigation has been opened into the accident while 23 people were taken to a hospital for observation and treatment.
Passengers reported that the force of impact was substantial and were described as ‘very lucky’.
