Air Canada will temporarily lay off 5,000 flight attendants
Air Canada is temporarily standing down more than 5,000 crew members due to more major capacity cuts.
The airline is in discussions with u unions over the temporary lay-offs.
"In light of the rapidly evolving covid-19 global crisis and a significantly reduced network, Air Canada has initiated discussions with its unions to begin placing employees on temporary, off-duty status," the airline said.
"Employees would be returned to active duty status when we ramp up our network schedule as conditions allow. We do not have details on timing as we are working through mitigation programs with each union."
One of the unions CUPE said the lay-offs will be effective until the end of April at least.
"The union is hopeful that conditions in the industry improve and allow the airline to begin bringing flight attendants back on-board."
The airline has withdrawn its profit guidance due to the uncertainty.
