Air crews face random drug tests

Friday, 26 Sep, 2008 0

Pilots, cabin crew, baggage handlers and air traffic controllers will soon be subject to random drug and alcohol testing under new laws designed to eliminate unsafe practices from the aviation industry which come into force today.

The testing regime – already in place for train drivers, maritime and mining workers – will be implemented through detailed drug and alcohol management plans devised by airlines and maintenance companies.

It includes pre-employment testing, post accident testing and testing where a manager has a reasonable suspicion that one of their workers is affected by drugs or alcohol.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority will administer the new program, with the aim of starting random testing before the end of the year.

The scheme will include a considerable education, training and rehabilitation component.
