Air India launches DC flights, eyes more US routes
Air India has inaugurated its latest US route with the launch of direct flights to Washingtion Dulles from Delhi.
The three times a week service is the first direct service to India from the DC area.
Local officials are hopeful the route will bring in about 30,000 passengers spending up to $30 million annually.
Three-class Boeing 777-200 LR aircraft are being used on the route.
The airline was afforded incentives to fly to the US capital by the state of Virginia and the District of Columbia, and may beef up the service to daily frequency if demand remains high.
DC is Air India’s fifth US destination so far, after New York, Newark, Chicago and San Francisco, and the national flag carrier still wants to expand further.
"We are looking at connecting two more cities – Los Angeles and either Houston or Dallas," Air India managing director Ashwani Lohani said.
The LA flight could launch as early as October, while a flight to either Texan city is still some way off yet.
