AirAsia launching new flights from KL to Tianjin

Budget carrier AirAsia recently ended plans to set up a China based joint venture, but is still sees plenty of scope to expand further in the China market.

It announced the upcoming launch of a new AirAsia X nonstop service linking Kuala Lumpur with Tianjin from October 29.

Also taking effect the same day, AirAsia will boost capacity on its existing Kuala Lumpur- Changsha service with larger Airbus A330 jets.

It will result in a combined 300,000 extra seats annually, it said.

"The announcements today of the new and exclusive route between Kuala Lumpur and Tianjin and the capacity increase to Changsha with our larger wide body aircraft will significantly boost tourism, trade and economic growth," said AirAsia X Malaysia CEO Benyamin Ismail.

Mainland China is one of AirAsia’s fastest growing markets, Ismail says.

With the addition of Tianjin, AirAsia will now serve 20 cities in China with about 550 direct flights a week from airports in Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.
