AirAsia records third quarter loss

AirAsia has blamed foreign exchange losses and its Indonesian operations for a third quarter loss.

Shares in the Malaysia-based airline fell as much as 7% after it posted a net loss of RM405.73 million (£63.4m) for the three months to September.

In the same quarter last year it recorded a profit of RM5.4 million.

But a rise in foreign exchange losses and a drop off in passengers for its Indonesian operation has pushed it into a loss this year.

The airline’s Indonesian operation suffered a plane crash in December 2014 that killed all 162 passengers and crew on board.

Next week, Indonesia’s national transport safety board is expected to announce the findings of an investigation into the crash.

The airline remained upbeat for the rest of the year, saying it was seeing strong demand in Malaysia and ‘better fare environment’ as Malaysia Airlines has begun its ‘capacity rationalisation process’.
