AirAsia shifting flights to Melbourne Avalon in December
AirAsia has opened reservations for flights to its upcoming new Melbourne base.
The airline’s long haul unit AirAsia X is switching Melbourne flights from Tullamarine to the smaller Avalon Airport.
The first service into Avalon Airport from Kuala Lumpur arrives on December 5, the airline said.
Reservations are now open and customers booked for flights after the changeover will be contacted with their new travel details or alternative options.
AirAsia is targeting carrying about 500,000 passengers to and from Melbourne Avalon.
The airport is prepping for its first international services with a brand new terminal building.
"The new international terminal construction is well underway. At almost 9000sqm, it will house state of the art facilities with the latest innovations in customs equipment and processes, as well as a fantastic choice of Duty Free shopping and food," said Avalon Airport CEO Justin Giddings.
AirAsia chose to switch for lower airport fees but also to offer travellers a more streamlined arrivals and departure service, says AirAsia X CEO, Benyamin Ismail.
"We’re already reviewing other exciting destinations we could potentially launch from Avalon in the future," Ismail said.
