AirAsia won’t take any aircraft deliveries this year

Tuesday, 29 Apr, 2020 0

Struggling budget airline AirAsia will not take delivery of any new aircraft  this year due to the near collapse of the global travel market.

Like most of its peers, the Covid-19 pandemic has severely affected the airline and it will defer deliveries, and is reviewing its orders with Airbus.

Airbus recently said it put six jets up for open sale that were originally due to be delivered to AirAsia.

AirAsia has 349 A321neos and 13 A320neos on order with Airbus.

It expects to end 2020 with 242 aircraft which is a net reduction of just one plane compared to 2019.

The group is targeting 30% reduction in costs which includes restructuring its fuel hedging.

All non-essential spending will be deferred and some work contracts will be renegotiated.

The airline has resumed limited domestic flights in Malaysia and will restart operations in Thailand from May 1, followed by Indonesia and the Philippines.
