Airbus to conclude A380 talks with Malaysia Airlines soon

Airbus said on Monday in KL that it hopes to soon conclude its A380 compensation talks for the late delivery of six A380’s with Malaysia Airlines.

John Leahy, Airbus COO Customers, told reporters in Malaysia, “In this region, we have resolved the issue with Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways and Qantas,” adding, “We hope to finalize the terms with Malaysian Airline in a couple of months”.

He said that the compensation could be in the form of a penalty, essentially a cash payment to the airline, or further discounts to the aircraft purchase, adding that the decision is up to the airline.

Malaysia Airlines, which had ordered six A380 jets, was previously supposed to take delivery of the first aircraft in 2008 but Leahy said that delivery will now be delayed to 2010.

Malaysia Airlines operates one of Southeast Asia’s biggest passenger fleets with about 100 aircraft, most of which are leased from its holding company, Penerbangan Malaysia Bhd, a state-run company that owns most of the airline’s assets.
