Airlines charge by the pound: part II
Might airlines charge by the pound and what services might passengers be paying for in the future?
The issue of pound charges aside, soft drinks and water were at the top of the list when SmarterTraveler.com asked the questions. Opinions on possible new charges went this way:
- Overhead luggage space
- Early boarding
- In-flight cell use
- Bathroom usage
- Oxygen
- Seat belts
- Anything they can think of
- Oversized passengers
The issue of charging by the pound is only speculation but apparently the airlines have sunk so low in esteem that some took it seriously. How much to charge? How about $1.40 to $2.25 a pound?
That was the number cited by the fictitious but well-read Derrie-Air, a hoax started in Philadelphia when ad agencies wanted to chart ad readership. The ads directed readers to the website, flyderrie-air.com.
Philadelphia Media Holdings spokesman Jay Devine said:
“The goal is to demonstrate the power of our brands in generating awareness and generating traffic for our advertisers, and put a smile on people’s faces.”
