Airport strikes called off
An series of airport strikes threatened for the peak summer season has reportedly been called off after workers accepted a new pay deal.
As reported by News From Abroad, baggage handlers employed by Aviance had threatened to walk out at up to 17 airports across the UK, including Heathrow and Gatwick.
But, the Daily Mail reports today, Aviance has upped its pay rise offer from 2.5% to 3.5%, a deal that the TGWU union has approved.
The newspaper quotes Richard Hunt, Aviance’s chief executive, as saying: “We have agreed a two-year deal that enables us to give reassurance to our customers that they will not have this ongoing uncertainty.
An ABTA spokesman is quoted as describing the deal as “a vote for common sense”.
