Alaska Airlines to resume Seattle-Cancun flights
Alaska Airlines said it plans to restart direct services to Cancun from its Seattle hub later this year.
Once it gets government approval, seasonal services will start in November.
The carrier had operated a Seattle Tacoma – Cancun service for nine years before cutting the route in 2010 when it chose to focus on building up the Hawaii market from the west coast.
It now wants to re-enter the Cancun market where airfares are rising.
This would become the only direct service from Seattle to Mexico’s East Coast.
The airline already has a well-established footprint in Mexico with non-stop flights departing from the West Coast to several cities including Los Cabos, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico City and Guadalajara.
Meanwhile, Alaska also announced a new streaming video in-flight service for passengers with their own portable devices, powered by Gogo Vision.
This is part of a $100 million revamp of its fleet of Boing 737 aircraft which is expected to be completed later this fall.
