All aboard … Now take your clothes off!
What is being billed as the first nude cruise around the Mediterranean has set sail, with 450 people shedding their clothes for the week-long voyage.
The Guardian today reports that the first big-ship nudist cruise around the Med is being hailed as “the biggest naked event in these waters since Aphrodite appeared in her birthday suit floating on a scallop shell”.
The newspaper reports that most of the passengers on the Flamenco ship are Spanish, but that Britons are the second-largest group. A spokeswoman for the organiser, Ghiesa Tours, is quoted as saying: “It is just like a normal cruise, but for people who like being nude.”
Passengers will reportedly only be required to dress for dinner, while all clothing will be banned on the sun-deck and the swimming pool. At all other times – from the casino to the dance floor – clothing is optional, and there will even reportedly be conferences with subjects including Nudism and Parallel Forms of Discrimination.
Mike Charles, the author the Bare Beaches nude bathing guide reviewed by News From Abroad yesterday, said: “I am sure this is a sign of things to come and I can say that I am surprised this has not happened before. In the Caribbean, nude cruises have been extremely popular for a long time, and I am sure there will be many more examples of the same thing in the Mediterranean in coming years.”
