AmaWaterways to launch Nile cruises

AmaWaterways has confirmed plans to launch river cruises on the Nile in 2021.

Executive vice president and co-owner Kristin Karst said the ship would carry up to 70 passengers with the majority of accommodation being suites.

AmaWaterways had planned to launch a ship on the Nile around 10 years ago but shelved the plans due to the Arab Spring uprising.

Karst told delegates at the CLIA River Cruise Conference in Amsterdam that safety would be a priority.

"You can never be 100% safe, but people always want to travel. We really feel that Egypt is ready for us to come back," she said.

She said security guards are now on all AmaWaterways ships and passengers can only get on board with key passes.

"Like most river cruise lines, this is what we have done since the Paris terror attack," she said.

She said the Nile cruises would not operate from May to September because of the extreme heat.

Rivals Viking and Uniworld are both introducing new vessels on the Nile next year.
