American Airlines allows crew to wear Black Lives Matter pins

American Airlines workers can openly wear Black Lives Matter pins on their uniform with the blessing of the company.

AA argues it is purely a matter of equality and not a political statement.

American joins Delta Air Lines and other big brands like Starbucks in allowing employees to wear items supporting the BLM movement.

"Fundamentally, we believe Black Lives Matter is an expression of equality, not a political statement," said AA spokeswoman, Sarah Jantz.

"It doesn’t mean other lives don’t matter, rather that in our society black lives should matter and be valued the same as others."

It is designing a special company pin with black members of its workforce.

"Our black team members saw the Black Lives Matter pin being worn at other airlines and companies and asked if they could do the same," Jantz added.

The move has reportedly caused some friction at the company with complaints there is no Blue Lives Matter pro-police alternative.

One employee reportedly said those that do not wear a BLM pin may ‘be ostracized and labeled as racist.’

The airline has made big strides over its diversity policies and overhauled its racial bias training after the NAACP issued a travel advisory, citing the treatment of black passengers three years ago.
