American Airlines and Qantas to revive joint venture bid

American Airlines and its Oneworld partner Qantas are hoping to get the green light for a strategic transpacific joint venture at the second time of asking.

The airlines plan to revive their joint venture bid and resubmit an application with the US Department of Transportation.

An original bid was rejected by the US DOT late last year.

The airlines feel a more business friendly regime, with a goal to cut unnecessary regulation, will see it approved at the second attempt.

“We do want to deepen that relationship in the way that we have talked about so we will be re-filing the application in the next few months,” Qantas International CEO Gareth Evans said on the sidelines of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) annual general meeting in Cancun, Mexico.

“We’ve had many conversations with the Department of Transport in Washington, both ourselves and American, through this process so they are fully briefed. So we will go through that application again. My understanding is it’s going to take much less time this time but we will have to wait and see once we reapply.”

The two Oneworld alliance partners have been codesharing for more than 25 years.

“‘Our partnership and our relationship still remains strong and there is still a huge amount of traffic transfer between the two of us using the existing codeshare relationship,” Evans added.
