American Airlines cutting back on Haiti flights
American Airlines is trimming its flight network to Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince with the suspension of daily flights from Fort Lauderdale and New York’s JFK Airport.
From November 3, that will leave just four daily flights to Haiti from Miami.
It operates Miami departures three times a day to Port-au-Prince and once to Cap-Haïtien, Haiti’s second largest city.
"It was a painful but necessary decision, given the economic circumstances, particularly in an environment where the cost of fuel is high," American told Renet Prévilon, director of customs at Toussaint Louverture International Airport.
It was deribed by Guy Francois, minister of Haitians Living Abroad as a ‘big loss’ for the diaspora and tourism.
However Delta Air Lines will help fill the gap with a new weekly service from New York JFK to Port-au-Prince from December 22.
Delta will also launch New York JFK-Antigua flights the same day.
