American Airlines launching nonstop flights to Reykjavik
American Airlines is the latest carrier to enter the fray with flights to Iceland from its hometown.
It will launch a new seasonal daily service to Reykjavik, Iceland next summer.
American is the third airline to announce flights from Dallas-Fort Worth to Reykjavik in just a few months after flag carrier Icelandair and Icelandic budget carrier WOW Air.
Despite the hot competition, American believes there is sufficient demand.
"Reykjavik has become a very popular leisure destination and we look forward to giving our customers the opportunity to experience Iceland’s unique landscape with our new direct service next summer," said Vasu Raja, vice president, network & schedule planning.
"The new destination complements our continued growth from Dallas-Fort Worth, including Rome and Amsterdam."
The service will operate from June 7- October 27 and tickets go on sale next week.
The route will be operated with 176-seat Boeing 757-200 aircraft, featuring lie-flat Business Class seats.
With the announcement, all the ‘big three’ legacy carriers have nonstop flights to Reykjavik.
Delta Air Lines flies from New York JFK and United from Newark.
However this is as much about fending off the growing threat of WOW Air’s ridiculously low fares (not including the usual nickel and diming add-ons) than trying to outdo each other.
WOW Air’s belief is that if fares are low enough, that alone creates the demand, meaning there are likely thin margins to be had on the soon to be ultra-competitive DFW-Reykjavik route.
WOW has expanded in the US at a dizzying speed and has a presence at nearly all the major international gateway cities.
It is even linking its homeland with direct flights from less heralded airports like Cleveland and Cincinnati.
