American Airlines pushes back 737 MAX return
American Airlines has once again extended cancellations of Boeing 737 MAX flights.
It pushed them back by another month to April 7, days after the FAA said the grounded jet wouldn’t be cleared to fly again until 2020.
That will mean its MAX jets have been idle for more than a year.
American says it will continue cancelling about 140 daily flights, which could impact travellers during the busy Spring Break travel period.
The continued grounding has led to American cancelling a whopping 46,000 flights, it said.
As well as the huge number of cancellations, American’s expected delivery of new MAX jets has been pushed back.
It currently has 24 MAX aircraft.
This week FAA Administrator Stephen Dickson updated lawmakers with the steps still outstanding before clearance can be signed off.
That will take the grounding into 2020 at least, while airlines will likely phase in MAX flights slowly over several weeks or months due to public anxiety.
Fellow MAX customers in the US, Southwest and United Airlines, could also extend cancellations into April 2020 of their currently grounded MAX jets.
