American Airlines suspends Venezuela flights

Tuesday, 18 Mar, 2019 0

As expected, American Airlines has temporarily halted all flights to and from crisis-torn Venezuela.

It follows a dire warning from the US State Department, advising all Americans to leave the country citing unrest and security risks.

"Do not travel to Venezuela due to crime, civil unrest, and arbitrary arrest and detention of US citizens," it stated.

All US diplomatic staff left Venezuela as power blackouts and water shortages added to the crisis.

That sparked the airline’s pilot union to order pilots to refuse flight duty on Venezuela routes.

American was the only US carrier still serving the country and operated two flights from Miami to Caracas and one to Maracaibo.

There has been no let-up in civil unrest opposing the rule of President Nicolas Maduro.

Opposition leader Juan Guaido has been recognised as the legitimate head of state by dozens of countries including the US.

The Venezuela National Assembly declared the presidency vacant, claiming Maduro’s re-election was unlawful.
