American cancels thousands of US flights
American Airlines is to cancel more US domestic flights today for the fourth day running.
Around 570 flights will not run today, following the grounding of more than 930 yesterday, 1,094 on Wednesday and 460 on Tuesday.
The disruption has been caused by the need to check the carrier’s fleet of MD-80s following a Federal Aviation Administration directive relating to wiring in the wheel well of the narrowbody aircraft.
The airline returned 132 MD-80s back into service yesterday and a total of 170 were due to be available for service by this morning.
More than 100,000 passengers are understood to have been affected and the airline is offering compensation to those “inconvenienced with overnight stays” via AA.com.
The airline issued an apology for the inconvenience and chairman and chief executice Gerard Arpey reportedly said he took full responsibility.
