American couple found dead in Dominican Republic hotel room
An American couple were found dead in their Dominican Republic hotel room on the day they were due to return home.
Engaged couple Nathaniel Holmes, 63 and Cynthia Day, 50 of Maryland, were discovered by staff in their room at the Bahia Principe hotel.
Dominican Today reported there were no signs of foul play, citing local law enforcement.
The couple were discovered after failing to check out on time.
Hotel director Francisco Romero said the couple had checked in on May 25.
"We are deeply saddened by the incident at one of our hotels in La Romana, Dominican Republic, and want to express our deepest condolences to their family and friends," the hotel company said in a statement.
"The staff immediately contacted the relevant local authorities which have initiated an investigation."
The Dominican Republic National Police said an autopsy showed the couple died of respiratory failure, adding that drugs used to treat high blood pressure were found inside the room.
However questions are still being asked how both were found dead without the alarm being raised.
Authorities are still awaiting results from toxicology tests.
In April the State Department raised its Dominican Republic warning and called for increased vigilance from vacationers due to rising levels of serious crime, including robbery and sexual assault.
