American drops first class meals on shorter flights

American Airlines Group said it will end first-class meals on most shorter flights under three hours starting next month.

The changes will take effect for flights within the US, Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean.

American currently offers first-class meals on flights lasting more than two hours.

The carrier said it will now provide a "packaged snack" for short flights of less than one hour, and "a variety of sweet and savory snacks" for scheduled journeys of up to two hours.

First-class passengers on flights of up to 2 hours 45 minutes will be served fruit, breads or sandwiches, and packaged snacks.

"We looked at what the customers wanted, and found a good number of customers didn’t want a full meal on a flight less than two hours," said American spokesman Casey Norton.

Norton said the changes will bring into line both American and US Airways’ meal policies.

American said it will continue offering full first-class meals on some of its busiest shorter routes such as Chicago to Dallas and New York.
