American expands its international market

American Airlines’ announcement it would fly nonstop to Ireland was a sign of the carrier’s continued effort to get healthy again through international expansion, according to airline industry observers.

Said Henry C. Joyner, the airline’s senior vice president of planning:

“We continue to focus on strong and growing international markets as we position American for long-term success under our turnaround plan.”

The addition of Dublin and Shannon to American’s network will increase its presence in Europe to a dozen destinations in eight countries. The airline will have 280 nonstop flights a week across the Atlantic.

“The expansion to Ireland builds on a range of new international service American has introduced or announced recently in several corners of the globe,” said Airline Travel News.

In Europe, American opened seasonal service this year in the Boston-Manchester and Miami-Manchester markets. The airline also started code-share operations with SN Brussels between New York Kennedy and Brussels.

American has also been more active in the Asia-Pacific market, and in Central and South America.

American announced its Chicago-Dublin and Boston-Shannon service would start next May. The carriers will use 211-seat 767-300 and 188-seat Boeing 757s.
