American pulls out of Gatwick

American Airlines is to close transatlantic operations from Gatwick and shift services to Heathrow.

The airline is using the US-EU open skies freedoms to concentrate the majority of flights from London to Heathrow.

This will mean the closure of American’s Gatwick operations after 26 years.

“All of American’s employees at Gatwick have been offered jobs at the airline’s other locations,” a statement said.

The final service to move from Gatwick to Heathrow will be a Dallas/Fort Worth connection on April 13.

The airline had already planned to shift one flight a week to Dallas and its daily Raleigh/Durham service from Gatwick to Heathrow on March 30. American has now secured the take off and landing slots required at Heathrow to move the second Dallas frequency.

American also serves Stansted from New York, which will see frequency rise to two flights a day from August 1.

The airline’s planning senior vice-president Henry Joyner said: “We want to strengthen our competitive position within the new open skies regime, so it makes sense to focus our efforts in London at Heathrow.

“These changes do not impact the total number of American flights to and from London. We’ll operate up to 18 daily departures to Heathrow this summer from seven US airports.”
