American woman killed in Bahamas shark attack
An American tourist was killed this week in a shark attack while paddleboarding in the Bahamas.
The attack came less than one mile offshore from New Providence island.
Lauren Erickson Van Wart, 44 from Boston died from her injuries shortly after being picked up by a lifeguard boat.
Her husband, who was with her at the time, was not injured.
Police said a lifeguard rescued both and took them to shore.
She suffered serious leg injuries and could not be saved, despite CPR efforts.
There was ‘significant trauma to the right side of her body,’ Bahamian police said.
The couple were staying at the Sandals Resort on Cable Beach.
The species of shark involved in the attack is unknown.
There have been over 30 recorded unprovoked shark attacks in Bahamian waters.
There have been two shark attacks in the past year resulting in one death, and one last month on a German diver who is still missing.
