Americans can now travel to Brazil visa-free

Wednesday, 17 Jun, 2019 0

Starting today, Americans can now visit Brazil without a visa.

A joint agreement between Presidents Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro was signed back in March giving US passport holders 90 days in the country

This can then be extended for a stay to up to 180 days.

Nationals of Canada, Japan and Australia also now get visa-free entry.

American Airlines welcomed the move.

"American Airlines applauds the Brazilian government for instituting a no-visa requirement that will allow for US, Canadian, Japanese and Australian visitors to travel to Brazil without a visa," said Martha Pantin, American’s director of corporate communications.

AA flies to Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia and Manaus.

The visa-free facility was first trialled during the Rio Olympic Games in 2016 and then a year later, Brazil introduced online visa processing with the fee slashed from $160 to $40.

Inbound numbers have been steadily growing since with the Brazilian ministry of tourism citing a 35% increase since the e-visa facility was rolled out.

It has also spurred the launch of new flights.

Brazilian carrier GOL launched new nonstop routes from Brazil to Miami and Orlando in late 2018.
