ANA cancels Dreamliner flights due to engine fault
Japanese airline All Nippon Airways has begun cancelling some flights after detecting faults associated with Rolls-Royce engines on its fleet of 50 Boeing 787 ‘Dreamliner’ jets.
It started cancelling flights on domestic routes on Friday in order to replace turbine blades which is says are prone to corrosion.
Cancellations will only impact domestic services, it said, as it fixes the problem on 13 Dreamliners used on routes within Japan.
ANA said there will be no cancellations on international routes as it had already begun repairing the fault on its remaining 37 Dreamliners used to fly overseas.
The fault first came to light following an investigation in February when an engine overheated, forcing a flight to turn back to Kuala Lumpur.
Repairs to the domestic fleet could result in about 350 cancellations over the next month.
Engine maker Rolls Royce said it is ‘working closely with ANA to minimise the effect on aircraft service disruption.’
A spokesman for Boeing also said: “We are aware of the situation and are working with Rolls-Royce and ANA to resolve any issues impacting the airplanes in service.”
ANA has the world’s largest Dreamliner fleet and only recently celebrated the delivery of its 50th Boeing 787.
