Gruesome products put on show to dissuade travellers from buying

A charity devoted to animal welfare has published photos of souvenirs including an elephant-foot stool and a banjo made from a turtle shell, in an effort to dissuade tourists from buying such things.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (Ifaw), which is aiming to protect animals by highlighting the problem to the tourist trade, says thousands of illegal imports are discovered each year. Common discoveries include products made from ivory, tortoiseshell, reptile skins, seashells and coral.

Jenny Hawley, from Ifaw, said: “Unfortunately souvenirs made from endangered species re often very openly sold in foreign resorts and it can be hard for tourists to imagine they are doing any harm. We are living in the middle of the biggest mass extinction since the dinosaurs and part of the reason for the decline is the massive poaching that goes on to provide the raw materials for tourist trinkets.”

According to the online news provider Ananova, extreme cases of illegal imports can be punished with up to seven years in jail and an unlimited fine.
