Ten more people have been killed in Lombok after another major earthquake hit the Indonesian island just two weeks after a series of earlier earhquakes killed more than 450.

The latestes magnitude 6.9 quake triggered a series of mudslides around Mount Rinjani and cut power across the island and damaged a further 150 homes in the north-east district of Sembalun.

It hit at around 10pm on Sunday and was felt in neighbouring Bali, where tourists and villagers ran out of buildings in panic. It was preceeded by a slightly smaller tremor earlier in the afternoon and was followed by more than 100 strong aftershocks which continued throughout the night and into this morning.

Six of those killed were on the neighbouring island of Sumbawa.

Tour operator Asian Trails said in a statement this morning: "Although we have no more guests in the affected areas we are in contact with hotels, suppliers and our local office in Lombok to get more information and will update you accordingly if there is any further information to report.

"For all upcoming books to Lombok please contact your Asian Trails representative who will be happy to discuss and advise on a case by case basis."

The UK Foreign Office has been warning against travel to north-east Lombok since August 10. Its travel advice says: "The FCO advise against all but essential travel to areas of Lombok north of the main east-west route from Pamenang, which passes north of the capital Mataram across to Lombok town (Jalan H. Mansur – Jalan Jendral Sudirman – Jalan Raya Mataram-Sikur – Jalan Raya Masbagik – Jalan Raya Anjani – Jalan Kooperasi – Jalan Raya Labuhan Lombok).

"This area includes the Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air) and the Mount Rinjani National Park, but excludes Senggigi on the west coast and Kayangan port on the east coast."
