Another pilot arrested for being drunk
A British pilot has reportedly been arrested for being drunk in charge of an aircraft, just minutes before he was due to take off for a long-haul flight.
According to a report in the Daily Mail, Royal Brunei pilot Charles Nicholls was breathalysed after security staff raised concerns that they could smell alcohol on his breath.
The newspaper reports that 170 passengers, mainly tourists and ex-patriot workers, were on the plane, which was heading for Bandar Seri Bagawan airport. The flight was delayed for several hours while the carrier found another pilot.
A police spokesman is quoted as saying: “A man aged 53 was arrested by police at Heathrow airport this morning. Police officers administered a breath test. He has been bailed to return to a police station in Mid August for further inquiries.”
Under current laws, it is an offence for pilots to have 20mg of alcohol or more per 100ml of blood.
