Police in India have arrested several men in connection with the gang rape of a Danish tourist close to her Delhi hotel.

The 51-year-old woman, who was staying at the Hotel Amax, told police she had visited the National Museum but got lost on her way back to the hotel in the evening.

As she was asking directions near the main railway station she claims she was accosted by ‘vagabonds’, sexually assaulted and robbed of cash and other valuables.

Police also described those arrested as "vagabonds".

In her statement to police, the woman said she had been in India for a week, first travelling to Agra and she arrived in the capital on Tuesday, according to a report in the Times of India.

The Danish embassy was informed and police have detained six suspects.
