Aruba again the scene of a mysterious murder
The latest case of murder in Aruba has some wondering: Is this small destination somehow star-crossed in a negative way?
First, there was the well-publicized disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway from the resort town. Her body was never found. No one has yet to be tried for her presumed murder.
Now, there’s the disappearance of Maryland woman Robyn Gardner.
The latest development is that the man being held in her disappearance took out an insurance policy against her accidental death before the couple traveled to Aruba, reported ABC News.
Gary Giordano bought the one-year, US$1.5 million policy from American Express over a cheaper, more commonly-purchased five year policy, a police source in Aruba told ABC.
Giordano, 50, was ordered by an Aruban judge on to remain in custody for 16 more days while authorities on the island continued to investigate the case. He has not been charged.
Gardner, 35, of Frederick, Md., disappeared Aug. 2 from the Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino in Oranjestad where she was staying with Giordano. He had reportedly invited her to join him on vacation after the two met online.
He reported his companion missing, saying she vanished after going snorkeling, but prosecutors have said there were discrepancies in his story.
Though authorities have presumed that Gardner is dead, her family said in a statement. "We have not given up hope that she may still be alive."
Giordano has been in trouble before, particularly involving women, according to several reports. He has twice been accused of domestic abuse and threats.
