ASEAN Games events, Philippines flights impacted by Typhoon Kammuri
The Philippines island of Luzon is bracing for Typhoon Kammuri, a powerful storm which could unleash winds of 150kph.
Thousands have been evacuated and scores of domestic flights cancelled by Philippine Airlines and Cebu Air.
Ports have closed stranding thousands of travellers.
Ed Monreal, general manager of Manila’s airport authority, said the country’s main air hub will likely close for 12 hours on Tuesday as the storm passes close to Metro Manila.
Kammuri is this season’s 20th storm to impact the Philippines is expected to soon make landfall in the Bicol region.
About two dozen areas are under a category 3 alert while Metro Manila is a lesser category 2.
The weather bureau said landslides and possible storm surges of up to three metres could hit coastal areas in the east.
Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System said it could impact up to eight million people with a ‘high humanitarian impact.’
It has caused some impact to the ASEAN Games being held in Manila, Subic and Clark on Luzon island.
"The windsurfing has been cancelled until we have a more accurate picture of the weather," Ramon Agregado, the organising committee’s head of Subic venues, told AFP.
The women’s triathlon event was brought forward to Sunday, Agregado said, ‘to take advantage of the good weather.’
Other outdoor events affected include beach volleyball, surfing, modern pentathlon, triathlon, and kayak.
The Games run until next week with nearly 9,000 athletes and team officials attending.
