Asian Beach Games a boon for Phuket tourism, say officials
Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports says preparations are on track for next month’s Asian Beach Games in Phuket, and the event will be a major boost for the local tourism industry.
Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul was speaking during a visit of Games venues: "Phuket has made great progress, but we must remember that besides competing, athletes will also be experiencing Phuket for themselves."
"We want to push the sports-tourism image of Phuket and make sure that visitors form fond memories of the island to ensure that they will return. We must take this opportunity to impress them."
The Games start on November 14, with 6,000 athletes from 45 countries competing in 26 beach and water sports.
Phuket governor Nisit Jansomwong said hotel operators have been very cooperative and are ready to welcome athletes.
"We expect that tourists will experience great service, as we are making sure that they will be offered deals and transportation options to the event," the governor said.
"More than two thousand volunteers from schools and universities in Phuket will be on hand for various tasks during the Games," he added.
