Asterix is one of the most popular comics figure in Europe. Created in France, the famed figure is known all across the continent with its popularity being extremely high not only in its country of birth but also in Germany, Italy, Spain or the UK.
France has a theme park dedicated to Asterix. Opened in 1989, the park is located approximately 35 km north of Paris, and 20 km way from the historic castle of Chantilly. It is France’s second most visited amusement park after Disneyland Paris. In 2024, it set an all-time attendance record, welcoming 2,842,000 visitors.
Compagnie des Alpes, was originally founded as a ski resort operator in 1989. It has since expanded into theme parks as well as tourist attractions and the hospitality sector. As an example, the company runs wax museums Grévin across Europe.
Its consolidated revenue for the 2024/25 fiscal year amounted to €1,397 million (+12.8%) reaching a new record. The Gross Operating Surplus of the Leisure Parks division amounted during FY 2024/25 to €176 million, up 23.8%.
Belantis acquisition opens the door to Asterix in Germany
Last April, Compagnie des Alpes completed its purchase of all shares in Event Park GmbH. Through this acquisition, it became the owner of Belantis, one of the largest amusement parks in eastern Germany, near Leipzig. The predominantly family-oriented theme park has drawn around 300,000 visitors annually in recent years and posted revenue of nearly €11 million in 2024.
But its destiny will change. Compagnie des Alpes wants to turn Belantis into an Asterix theme park. The company believes that the park’s location near Leipzig, Dresden and Berlin is indeed an invaluable asset. While the site spans more than 80 hectares in full ownership, including 41 hectares reserved for future development.
Compagnie des Alpes, in agreement with the franchise owners at Éditions Albert René, has green-lit a gradual transformation of Belantis into the first Parc Asterix outside France.
The official rebrand to “Parc Asterix Germany” is scheduled for 2030/31. The rollout will begin in spring 2026 when the first themed area, dedicated to the canine character Idefix, opens its gates. Belantis already closed its doors to start its transformation.
The company believes the converted park has the long-term potential to reach nearly 900,000 visitors per year — tripling its current attendance levels. The strategic move is backed by market forces. Not only Germany is the second-largest European buyer of Asterix comics after France, but it also ranks as Europe’s No. 2 theme-park market overall.
