ATF 2011 kicks off in Phnom Penh
Asean Tourism Forum 2011 – the region’s annual travel trade show – has launched in Phnom Penh with the Cambodian capital expecting a full house for the event’s 30th anniversary.
Ministers of tourism from the 10 ASEAN nations, together with numerous key sector players, are expected to attend the forum, which aims to strengthen the regional bloc’s tourism efforts.
“This is a very big event for our country,†said Ministry of Tourism secretary of state So Mara.
All 500 booths at the three-day Travex exhibition have been sold to 460 companies from across the 10 Asean countries.
Four hundred buyers – pared down from the 1000 who applied to attend – will be running their eye over new and refreshed travel products and services at the Diamond Island Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The Asean Tourism Conference being held as part of the event will have as its theme ecotourism and sustainable tourism, with a special focus on managing tourism in destinations that are home to Heritage sites.
Cambodian Association of Travel Agents president Ang Kim Eang said the ATF was a chance to strengthen cooperation throughout the nations which make up ASEAN, as well an opportunity to increase awareness of the region as a highly competitive destination.
“It is very important to promote ASEAN tourism together, as a region,†he said.
