Attempts to reassure tourists after Kenyan gun attacks kill 29
The Kenya Tourism Board has reassured tourists that the gun attacks in Kenya this weekend were not in tourist areas.
At least 29 people have died in two gun attacks on the coast of Kenya in the townships of Hindi, which is 15 kilometres from Lamu, and Gamba, located in the Tana River region on Saturday.
KTB said neither Hindi or Gamba are areas frequented by international tourists and there were no tourists in the area at the time of the incidents.
It added that Lamu Island, one of Kenya’s primary tourist resorts, was in no way affected by these attacks.
KTB said in a statement: "The township of Hindi is approximately 15 kilometres from Lamu and the majority of visitors travelling to Lamu arrive by air into the local airport."
"An update will be issued later today following a National Tourism Crisis Management Committee meeting convened by the Commerce and Tourism Principal Secretary."
The incidents have been attributed to Mombasa Republican Council, a separatist movement in the coastal region and security agencies are tracking down the attackers.
The gun attacks are the latest in a series of terrorism incidents in coastal regions and in Nairobi in the last three years.
