Australia lowers travel advisory to Fiji
DFAT at lowered its travel advisory to Fiji from “reconsider the need to travel” to to “high degree of caution”, for Fiji overall, with “reconsider the need for travel to Suva” remaining in palce, while also still claiming that the political situation in Fiji remains tense.
The latest Fiji advisory says, “The security situation remains highly uncertain, and reactions to the coup could lead to violent clashes”, which is not what Fijians are telling The Mole actually on location in Fiji now.
The travel advisory warns Australians to stay clear of military installations, adding, “There have been many instances of intimidation of individuals and detention for questioning by the RFMF (Royal Fijian Military Forces, checkpoints have been set up in Suva, Nadi, Lautoka and Labasa and curfews could also be imposed without notice.”
The Mole drove through the miltary checkpoint at Nadi yesterday a number of times, waving to the two soldiers, who responded with a big “Bula” and a wave back.
The words “military checkpoints” have to be put in context as these are just a couple of temporary barries in the middle of the road with a soldier standing watching the traffic going in each direction, waving to the cars and the drivers.
The Mole has also not seen any cars being stopped.
Fiji tourism oeprators hope that the lowering of the Australian advisory will increase tourist numbers from Australia and that travellers, wholesalers and agents that may have held back from Fiji trips will now once again put Fiji at the top of the agenda as one of Australia’s top destinations.
As The Mole has reported all this week that there is no evidence whatsoever from either what The Mole has seen or from the discussions The Mole has had with dozens of operators and tourists, that there is anything whatsoever to be concerned about in Fiji.
One thing is for certain this morning as dawn breaks over Fiji, that workers right across the country will be celebrating that the potential return of the Fijian tourism industry to normal will secure their income and jobs.
