Australian Outback Marathon heading for Ayers Rock
Ayers Rock Resort at Uluru, now operated by Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia, is launching a $50 million capital expenditure programme starting in September with the refurbishment of the 5-star, 200-room Sails in the Desert property.
The resort’s conference centre will be closed in February for five months to allow upgrading of facilities, including high-tech services aimed at attracting the meetings market.
“There will be some very special things happening at the resort,†said Ray Stone, Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia’s head of sales, marketing and distribution.
One of the events being flagged is the Australian Outback Marathon, which is subject to a joint ventures agreement between the resort and the race organisers.
“â€I believe this race has the potential to be one of the world’s great marathons – up there with New York and London,†Stone said.
Other plans are for a golf course and world leading spa and wellness facilities.
“We need to create more reasons for people to visit the resort,†Stone said.
Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia is 100 percent owned by the Indigenous Land Corporation, which is investing in tourism properties and training.
