Australians abroad urged to return home quickly
Aussies overseas have been given a stark warning by the government: get home ASAP.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is urging all Australian travellers currently overseas to make arrangements now to return while they still can.
"If you’re already overseas and wish to return to Australia, we recommend you do so as soon as possible by commercial means," it said in a statement.
"As more countries close their borders or introduce travel restrictions, overseas travel is becoming more complex and difficult. If you decide to return to Australia, do so as soon as possible. Commercial options may become less available," the department said.
The number of countries closing their borders or imposing 14-day quarantines is growing daily. In the past 24 hours Malaysia and Indonesia have announced either a total ban or heavy restrictions on foreign travellers.
Dozens of countries are now effectively off-limits in one form or another to a growing number of nationalities including Australians.
Even from countries where it is still possible to fly home from, flight options are disappearing fast.
Qantas announced it will slash its international flight schedule by up to 90% until June.
Earlier this week the federal government issued a blanket travel warning covering the entire world urging Australians to ‘reconsider your need for travel.’
