BA agrees £13.2m Gatwick savings
British Airways has won approval from unions to bring together long haul and short haul cabin crew at Gatwick.
The changes affecting 1,800 staff are expected to save the airline £13.2 million a year through “significant” productivity gains, staff flexibility and cuts in employee costs.
The airline runs more than 200 flights a day to and from Gatwick – 186 short haul and 18 long haul. It employs 1,000 on short haul services and 800 on long haul.
The deal, which comes into force in October, follows a consultative period with the Transport and General Workers Union and Amicus which resulted in votes by “substantial majorities” for the changes, the airline said.
Long haul cabin crew have been given the option to transfer to the long haul fleet at Heathrow.
BA chief executive Willie Walsh said: “This agreement will remove duplication and introduce more efficient working practices, while mainatining standards of customer service.
“It is an excellent example of how all of us in BA can work together to recognise that the industry has changed, face up to the new realities and get ourselves in shape to take on and beat the competition.”
