BA catering row talks continue
Talks aimed at resolving a dispute at British Airways’ in-flight catering firm are due to continue today.
This is despite the company, Gate Gourmet, originally setting a deadline of yesterday afternoon to finalise a new deal with the airline or face entering administration.
US-owned Gate Gourmet had warned that administrators would be called to its UK arm in unless an agreement was made with the airline.
The company has been at the centre of a dispute after dismissing 670 workers – action which led to a walk-out by BA ground staff, paralysing the airline’s services from Heathrow for two days and leaving tens of thousands of passengers stranded.
An agreement in principle has now been reached with BA over the terms of an improved supply contract but no deal has been signed due to ongoing arguments between Gate Gourmet and the Transport and General Workers Union, which represents the dismissed employees, the Financial Times reported.
BA’s customer services and operations director Mike Street reportedly said that the “basis and substance” of a deal had been agreed with the food supplier.
He was quoted as saying: “The key to unlocking this dispute now lies firmly in the hands of Gate Gourmet and the TGWU. They must sort out their differences for the good of our customers and the employees of Gate Gourmet.”
