BA flights to Saudi to continue
British Airways will continue to fly to Saudi Arabia for the time being despite the latest terror killings in the Gulf kingdom.
According to a report by the internet news service Ananova, the airline is planning to maintain its present service of four flights a week to both Riyadh and Jeddah.
Last weekend 22 people, mostly foreigners, died when terrorists stormed the eastern Saudi oil centre at Khobar.
BA, which flies to Saudi Arabia from Heathrow, suspended Saudi flights from August 13 to September 4 last year following terrorist attacks.
But a BA spokesman is quoted by Ananova as saying: “It’s business as usual, but we are keeping a close watch on the official Foreign Office travel advice.”
The Foreign Office is currently advising Britons against “all but essential travel to Saudi Arabia”.
It said in a statement: “We continue to believe that terrorists remain determined to carry out further attacks in Saudi Arabia, and that these may be in the final stages of preparation. If you choose to travel to, or remain in, Saudi Arabia you should make sure you have confidence in your individual security arrangements. You should maintain a high level of vigilance, particularly in public places frequented by foreigners such as hotels, restaurants and shopping malls. You should adopt a low profile and avoid public gatherings, which could lead to disorder.”
Oil prices have soared to new heights after the Khobar attack, putting increased economic pressure on the air travel trade.
