BA goes ahead with clocking-on system
New regime will begin today at Heathrow and Gatwick airports
British Airways will today introduce its controversial clocking-on system at Heathrow and Gatwick airports – just weeks after the proposal caused travel chaos for thousands.
As reported, Heathrow was hit by a massive industrial dispute last month because of the clocking-on system, after BA check-in staff staged an unofficial strike, grounding hundreds of flights and causing misery for many thousands of travellers.
Three unions – the TGWU, GMB and Amicus – supported the strike but the chaos was ended after several days of talks between union leaders and BA executives. Union representatives claim the problem was caused because BA was trying to introduce the system without gaining the agreement of its workers.
According to Sky News, the carrier has announced that the system will start at Heathrow and Gatwick airports today.
