BAA airports to be hit by strike action
A series of strikes are set to hit BAA airports in January.
Disruption is expected with 24-hour walk-outs on January 7 and 14 and for 48-hours from January 17.
All seven of BAA’s UK airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, are likely to be affected.
The Unite union, which represents 5,000 airport workers, has called the strikes following a ballot of members.
The dispute centres on the company’s plans to shut the final pension scheme to new employees.
Unite members include security staff and firefighters.
A BAA spokesman said: “We continue to believe that industrial action is unnecessary, as none of our existing employees will be affected by the changes to our pension arrangements. “However, we do recognise that there are important concerns and these will continue to be addressed through discussions with the unions and staff.
“We would ask for the understanding of passengers as we work hard to resolve this issue.”
