Bahamas investigates two US flights in near miss incidents
Bahamas aviation authorities are investigating two air safety incidents involving American Airlines flights.
The Bahamas Civil Aviation Authority said two near-miss incidents at different airports in February are being closely looked at.
It will take action if it determines any breaches of safety, it said.
On February 12, an American plane landing in Exuma was forced to take evasive action to avoid a plane taking off.
The incident injured two flight attendants who were placed on leave.
Two weeks later, an American flight was on the runway in the process of taking off at North Eleuthera when another jet flew overhead.
The investigations come after a Serious Safety Concern advisory was filed by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority.
The advisory said American Airlines stated that neither of the other aircraft self-announced their position by radio.
This is mandatory for airports that don’t have air traffic control towers.
There have been calls for a full review of airport operational procecedures.
“Should the investigation identify any areas requiring corrective action or safety enhancements, appropriate measures will be implemented,” the Bahamas CAA said.
