Bahamas lifts ban on Americans

The Bahamas has reversed its earlier decision to ban Americans.

The government now says travelers from the US are welcome but must follow strict health protocols.

Americans along with other international visitors are must undergo a 14-day quarantine at their own expense.

No interisland travel is allowed and curfews will be in force.

The change of heart is to create a level playing field for travelers of all nationalities, the government said, although it is more likely a decision based on economics.

"The provisions governing the admission of foreign visitors to The Bahamas were changed in order to create a uniform standard of treatment for all visitors to the Bahamas" a statement said.

"The creation of a uniform framework means that there is no longer any need to create any list of countries from which The Bahamas would accept commercial flights; which list thereby excluded other countries."

American Airlines doesn’t expect to see demand spike quickly.

After the Bahamas first banned US travelers the airline pushed back the resumption of flights to September.

"We continue with our plan to resume our flights in September," airline spokesperson Laura Masvidal told the Miami Herald.
