Balearics want booze ban on all flights
Tourism officials for the Balearic Islands are calling for a ban on alcohol on flights to and from the islands to crack down on bad behaviour by holidaymakers.
General manager for tourism Pilar Carbonell is asking the Spanish Government and the European Commission to ban booze from flights and airports.
"There are passengers who consume too much alcohol before boarding flights causing security issues for other people. Consequently, we believe that a complete ban has become necessary," she said.
"We also urge for alcohol to be banned at airports as passengers could be drinking unnecessarily before boarding flights. Passengers cannot smoke, even if they can buy cigarettes and as such they should not be permitted to drink before or during their flight".
The call comes after a series of alcohol-fuelled incidents on flights to and from the party islands of Ibiza and Mallorca.
Ryanair has already banned passengers from taking alcohol on all Ibiza flights from the UK and carries out searches at the boarding gate.
Any alcohol bought at the airport must be placed in the hold and anything not suitable for storing must be disposed of.
