Bali rebounding in Sweden

Bali is coming back strongly on the Swedish market and leading tour operator, Lime Travel, has asked that promotions be stepped up by the Indonesian authorities to take advantage of the rebound.

Tony Lubeck (pictured), who is responsible for the Asian region, said, “I think Bali/Indonesia could try a bit harder considering the traffic is improving and they have the perfect resorts for us to sell.

“Bali is very strong in the Villa concept” with private poolswhich is really popular at the moment, especially for us working in the upmarket segment.”

Lime Travel’s top three destinations in Asia are Thailand, followed by Malaysia and Bali. Globally, Mauritius is its top seller, followed by Thailand and Aruba/Curacao.

Lubeck said that with more seats available to Asia, business this winter should be strong from the Scandinavian market.

He however thinks that marketing activities by Asian countries are “quite weak”.

“Considering that all major countries have their own tourism offices in Stockholm, their presence is quite anonymous, I am afraid. I think they concentrate too much on expensive media campaigns with TV and press. Very little is done to attract the travel trade.”

On the possibilities of low cost, long haul carriers opening up new markets, Lubeck said he did not see them as a viable alternative. “Based on the knowledge so far about low cost carriers, I think travellers for long haul flights still seek a bit more service level and amenities than on short haul flights.

“The average length of stay for a trip to Asia is still quite long (10-14 nights in average) and I see no change there really.

“When it comes to climate issues, people are more aware of seasons, but this fact has also made people a bit more willing to gamble and travel during the low season.

“Asia will always be in favour due to reasonable “living costs” and will always be attractive for Scandinavians by obvious reasons – food, people, climate etc.

“I do not see any real threats in a near future for the Asian countries. But this said, of course we rely on factors such a stable economy. Also Asia cannot take much more of instability in government issues like in Thailand.”
